New Horizons Academy to Demonstrate the Benefits of Green Building by Creating One of the Greenest Classrooms in Nevada
A chance meeting at a green building conference in San Diego 14 months ago has grown into a demonstration project soon to be known as "One of the Greenest Classrooms in Nevada." This showcase green classroom at New Horizons Academy will play an important role in the development of the Academy’s future green campus as it serves as a "live" demonstration of the benefits of an environmentally sustainable classroom.
New Horizons Academy has teamed up with Nevada Power, UNLV Research Foundation, Sunlight Direct, Philips Lighting Company, Sherwin Williams Paint, Shaw Carpet and other sponsors and eco-friendly manufacturers to develop the showcase green classroom. Phase I: Improved Daylighting involves the installation of the Sunlight Direct daylighting unit. The company’s Hybrid Solar Lighting (HSL) technology uses a solar concentrator to collect and distribute sunlight from the roof of the Academy into the interior of one of the classrooms via fiber optic cables (www.sunlight-direct.com).
The Discovery Channel visited at New Horizons Academy on Monday, December 17th to document the “New Horizons Academy Goes Green” story to be broadcast in September 2008. A team from the Discovery Channel is traveling throughout the USA to film 20 stories in a series to be called "Ecopolis."
The green classroom will be unveiled to the public on Earth Day, April 22, 2008.
New Horizons Academy has set a fundraising goal to secure $795,000 or more by September 1, 2008 to cover the costs of completing the project's construction documents including the ongoing LEED documentation. Cash gifts of any size are appreciated and naming opportunities are available.
