New Horizons Academy - Lied Foundation Campus: The Energy Education Station

New Horizons Academy exists to assist students with learning differences. This is a student who is intelligent but does not achieve to his/her full potential in conventional classrooms that use traditional teaching methods. Our students are part of a high-risk population that suffers from central auditory processing disorders, sensory processing confusion and motor difficulties, attention deficit disorders (ADD/ADHD), lack of language and pragmatic skills and other multi sensory processing difficulties. This student may be distracted and unable to concentrate in a large classroom setting. New Horizons is often a student's first successful educational experience.

Founded in 1974, New Horizons Academy is a licensed, private, non–profit, alternative day school. New Horizons Academy is licensed by the Nevada State Department of Education. The extended school year for students ages 5 through 18, emphasizes academic skills, as well as acquisition of a strong sense of respect and responsibility towards self and others. The New Horizon's team of dedicated professionals is committed to developing and implementing a personalized educational program that increases strategies for learning and improves self–confidence and self–esteem.

Providing an Educational Alternative

  • The educational programs at New Horizons Academy are individualized and comprehensive. We begin with a careful assessment of the student and build our program to meet the specific needs of each individual.
  • Based upon each student's age and grade placement, remedial and/or developmental programs are designed for each student. Specific priority is given to the student's identified problem area.
  • All individuals learn best through one or more channels: vision, hearing, movement, touching, or a combination of these. In some instances there are disorders of the basic psychological processes that affect the way a child learns. NHA introduces new methods and techniques used to reinforce and encourage learning strategies and styles. Our ultimate goal is to provide students with the cognitive tools necessary for becoming independent learners and thinkers.
  • A Student/staff ratio of 10 to 1.
  • A full–day program for students from Kindergarten through 12th grade.
  • An experienced, qualified staff that includes teachers certified in learning disabilities, dyslexia, multi-sensory language and writing approaches for learning different students.
  • Positive discipline strategies include use of logical consequences, choice therapy, problem-solving techniques and learning responsible social behaviors, anger management techniques and healthy self expression through the calming effects of our music program.

Mission and Objectives

The Academy's mission is to understand individual strengths and learning styles, and prepare students for success in any classroom setting. Once new learning methods are mastered, students will have increased cognitive strategies and problem solving capabilities that will enable them to participate more positively within their specific social, academic and spiritual centers. Students will be encouraged enough to complete their education, attend college or complete vocational work programs, and all grades and credits are transferable to public or private schools. Most importantly, they will become an asset to the community.
